Can I Have A Dog?

My daughter regularly asks me questions as I’m tucking her into bed, the most common one is “Can I have a dog?”  For a variety of reason I would love to be able to bring a dog home for her, for more practical reasons the answer needs to be “No,” for now.

The most difficult lesson we get to learn as a kid is that we don’t always get what we want — her comment as she read this over my shoulder was “Oh, I learned that lesson before I was even born.” But I haven’t learned it, I still want many things. Like a ’57 T-bird hard top convertible with port hole windows, or more shoes than I can wear in a year, or a new running hat…I want, I want, I want!

As I practice letting go of wanting ‘things’ the void is filled with bigger wants…I want the education system to miraculously be revamped, for the world to stop producing so much garbage and to find a way to get rid of the garbage we’ve already created.  I want poverty and hatred to end and for our environment to be valued… I want, I want, I want!

I will say however, that as I practice wanting less and being grateful I recognize more abundance and peace and love in my life than I ever dreamed.

Here’s hoping that you don’t get all you want either…
