Finding the Good Stuff…

What do you look for when shopping at a thrift store?

I know it’s easy to get distracted by junk or outrageous items, but I’ve realized that my first response to an item is visual. Does it have an appealing pattern, texture, or color?

The second is by touch; does it feel good? Would it be itchy on my skin? Is it soft and comfortable?  I am always drawn to silk; it feels wonderful to the touch.

The final test is, does it fit?  I always try on items for myself because sometimes items on a rack look better in my imagination than they do on my body, and believe me, I have an active imagination and have had quite a few good laughs out of this one.  But how it looks isn’t as important again as to how it feels.  Can you sit down comfortably? Can you bend over without having someone wish they had a quarter? Can you reach over your head without feeling exposed?

I once heard the advice that you should try something facing away from the mirror, bend over, sit down, stretch, etc. to see how it feels, and then if it passes all those tests turn around and see how it looks. I haven’t always abided by this rule, especially when something is cute and costs so little, but in the long run, those items that are comfortable in every situation are the ones I keep around.

Here’s to finding the good stuff!
